National City Bank is one of NE Ohio's strongest brands and a major employer in the region. Last week it was announced that the bank was bought out by PNC in the aftermath of the $700 billion bail out bill. Bill O'Neill is wondering why National City wasn't protected? It is a good question. Our region has been hit extra hard by home foreclosures, job loss, and the general economic downturn of the country. We can't afford to have a major employer bought up and consolidated.
Related: Senator Sherrod Brown has been working hard to investigate why National City Bank wasn't a priority in the banking bill. Brown has written a letter to Interim Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Financial Stability Neel Kashkari, who is apparently from Ohio. In a written statement, Brown said, "As a native of Ohio, I know you can appreciate how the people of my state find it incomprehensible…to eliminate an untold number of jobs and bring about the end of an institution that has served Ohioans for more than a century and a half." It is unfortunate that this story has been largely lost in the election coverage. Thank you Senator Brown for not letting it fall through the cracks.
This is the best closing argument ad I have seen from the Obama campaign. It helps respond in general to the desperate attacks of Republicans continuing to throw anything at Obama hoping it will stick.
It is in these final weeks of the campaign that local candidates try to be heard in a media market saturated by advertising. Democratic Candidate for Summit County Engineer Al Brubaker has released a television ad. The spot highlights Al's family life and history here in the Akron area.
Democrats in Summit County are exceptionally coordinated this year and are looking to maximize their gains from the projected record turnout on Election Day. Candidates like Russ Pry, Frank Communale, Democratic Judicial Candidates, and Al Brubaker have been working with the Obama campaign locally as a team. I know most of you just said "duh," but it is a stark contrast to what is happening on the Republican side. Deep divisions remain from the infighting that consumed Summit County Republicans this past spring. The result is that they have very limited coordination and many local candidates are left to go it alone while Democrats work together countywide. I think this will be what leads to a Democrat sweep on Election Day.
The downturn in our economy over the past couple weeks has to be continuing to diminish the chances for Issue 5. Last week, Attorney General Candidates Richard Cordray and Michael Crites are joined by former AGs Betty Montgomery and Jim Petro in support of Issue 5. I have yet to see any public official I have heard of come out against Issue 5.
Akron related: Devo and The Black Keys will be playing a concert this Friday at the Civic Theater in Akron to benefit the Summit County Democratic Party and in support of Barack Obama. I have heard a rumor that a high level special guest may make an appearance at the event. Let me just say that if this rumor is true, Obama supporters won't be disappointed. Typically I don't like to post hearsay, but my information comes from two separate and unrelated sources.
Unrelated: Tomorrow, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be in Cleveland for an appearance with Congresswoman Betty Sutton at the Great Lakes Institute for Energy Innovation. The event will focus on the energy innovations of the institute including their research on wind energy initiatives and fuel cells.
Bill O'Neill's campaign released a radio ad today touting his current work as a pediatric nurse and experience in the military and as a judge. It is a unique resume for a Congressional candidate. O'Neill has particular expertise on our healthcare system because he works in a hospital as a nurse.
Notice the tag line "it is time we stop bailing out Wall Street."
