The Politico politics and government news Web site is reporting that News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch said in an interview that the company's $1 million gift to the Republican Governors Association was prompted by his friendship with former Fox News commentator and Ohio gubernatorial candidate John Kasich. News Corp. owns Fox News.
Politico's On Media blog said:
Murdoch, who was in Washington to receive an award from The Media Institute, brushed aside concerns that the gift, which was unusually large and one-sided for a media company, might hurt Fox’s credibility as a news organization that reports on politics.
“It doesn’t reflect on Fox News,” he said. “It had nothing to do with Fox News. The RGA [gift] was actually [a result of] my friendship with John Kasich.”
Politico also quoted Murdoch as saying that while he expected News Corp.'s contribution to the RGA to become public, he didn't anticipate a $1 million contribution to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for political advertising to also become public.
The Ohio Chamber Commerce, for the first time in its history, endorsed in the Ohio gubernatorial election this year. The organization picked Kasich.
