Ad Watch: O'Neill Focused On National City Bank

  • Author: Kyle Kutuchief

radio ad audio ————————->
National City Bank is one of NE Ohio's strongest brands and a major employer in the region. Last week it was announced that the bank was bought out by PNC in the aftermath of the $700 billion bail out bill. Bill O'Neill is wondering why National City wasn't protected? It is a good question. Our region has been hit extra hard by home foreclosures, job loss, and the general economic downturn of the country. We can't afford to have a major employer bought up and consolidated.

Listen to O'Neill and LaTourette in their only debate live on 90.3 WCPN at 12:30pm today.

Related: Senator Sherrod Brown has been working hard to investigate why National City Bank wasn't a priority in the banking bill. Brown has written a letter to Interim Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Financial Stability Neel Kashkari, who is apparently from Ohio. In a written statement, Brown said, "As a native of Ohio, I know you can appreciate how the people of my state find it incomprehensible…to eliminate an untold number of jobs and bring about the end of an institution that has served Ohioans for more than a century and a half." It is unfortunate that this story has been largely lost in the election coverage. Thank you Senator Brown for not letting it fall through the cracks.

I believe Sen Brown created said crack.

The bailout received a Yes vote from Sen. Brown. Just a thought, but maybe things like use of the bailout money should have been thought of before the he approved writing a $700B blank check.

I won't praise him for investigating a problem he caused.

Kyle, You are such a freaking homer. You praise Brown for writing a letter. A freaking, freaking letter. Exactly what is that freaking letter going to do about all of those lost freaking jobs? NOthing. He is a freaking senator in the U.S. Congress, and his party is in control of BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS!!

And you praise him for writing a freaking letter.

But Brown will be able to stand up his next election and talk about how he FOUGHT to keep those NC jobs.

By the way I listened to the Potter-Sutton debate and Betty Sutton is not qualified, nor intelligent enough to take care of my puppy. But you know what? Because of her district, it would not matter if she ran against Albert Einstein, she would still get 60% of the vote. And people wonder why this country is in the shape it's in.

It's amazing hearing everyone talk like this thing is already over. Obama has already shown he has great difficulty in finishing.

The only reason his imminent coronation is being hyped so much is for the great uproar of the stolen election that will ensue when MCain wins.

Like we have seen, the undecideds always go against Obama on election day.

This is amazing. O'Neill would've voted for the bailout (even though he initially criticized LaTourette for voting for the bailout despite the fact that LaTourette voted against it twice), and it's the bailout which has allowed PNC to gobble up NCB.

O'Neill's spin and stance on this is as Orwellian as it gets.

  5. Greg October 30th, 2008 at 10:43 am

Also, isn't O'Neill criticizing LaTourette for wanting an investigation? Isn't this exactly what Sen. Brown is doing with his letter? How can you implicitly criticize LaTourette by praising the O'Neill ad, but in two paragraphs down you praise Sen. Brown for writing a letter?

    Greg,

O'Neil isn't clever enough to be Orwellian. He's just reactionary and undisciplined. Nice guy though. Odd but nice.

Didnt I mention this the other day?

Clueless- great point. Sherrod Brown gets praise for writing a letter? What a hero.

Sherrod Brown, Ohio's junior senator. Couldnt cut the head off the snake in 1990 when we defeated him for AG.

Why not pull back a bit to look at the larger picture?

Why have banks gotten into the situation they're in?

Greenspan testified last week that deregulation and unaccountability….something Mr. Irrational Exuberance used to praise…..has now left him scratching his head in light of the unscrupulous and reckless evidence of not moral, but immoral, capitalists running Wall Street casinos.

Greenspan thought unbridled capitalists could be trusted….he admitted he was mistaken. So should all conservatives.

Trying to fix the problem that Greenspan rightly pointed out was caused by immoral and unchecked greedmongering is not the point where the argument should be waged. Fixing it will take a decade.

  9. This Is A Classic October 31st, 2008 at 9:23 am

I haven't seen too many posts on the Moran – Nero race so I will post this classic from this year. Nero sure didn't get his half million dollars the poster said he was going to get. The last paragraph might be one of the funniest things ever written on this website.

Nero flew back to Columbus from a corporate meeting to be sworn in, them had to return to his meeting. Tuesday was the only day he could take the oath and he was excused from the vote he missed. But he did cast votes on a number of bills that day so the record will show that he was there and voting. A non-starter of an issue.

He's also vaulted to the top of the House Republican priority list, which means they will probably spend a half million in the race for Nero. Nero is a Kevin Coughlin ally. Jon Husted and other Coughlin pals in the House will make sure they keep that district in Republican hands.
