DEVO Plays Akron's Civic Theater For Obama

The Black Keys, Chrissy Hynde, and Devo Rally For Obama

Last night, three of Akron biggest bands came together to play a benefit concert at Akron's Civic Theater for the Summit County Democratic Party and to support Barack Obama. Congressman Tim Ryan, Attorney General Candidate Richard Cordray, Akron City Council President Marco Summerville, Summit County Executive Russ Pry, and other prominent Democrats addressed the crowd in between musical sets. Best speech was given by Tim Ryan as he fired up the crowd. The theater was packed and people were excited to be there. It was a mix of people proud to be Democrats in Akron. These are my kind of people.

The Black Keys opened. They are really tight live and played a great set. In between songs they talked about their Akron roots. It was a perfect opening act. Chrissy Hynde played an acoustic set with another guitarist. She doesn't really need a band because her voice is so good. Chrissy got a little more political than The Black Keys and talked about the need to elect Barack. It wasn't any deep policy discussion, but was still an enthusiastic endorsement. I had no clue what to expect from Devo. They were really good and so energetic. They jumped all over, had coordinated costume changes, and sounded great. It was clear they were happy to be playing in their home town. The show ended with all the bands playing together. My sources tell me the show raised at least $60,000 and that number will go up as the final receipts are totaled.

    Attention: Washed up entertainers!!!!!

    No longer relevant?

    Can't sell any records?

    Can no longer tour?

Can't get any movie or tv work?

We have the answer! Just say something stupid and bash Bush, or McCain, or Palin (cybill freaking shepard!) and you will get some media face time!

Remember folks, The more outrageous the comment, the more you will get noticed!

I hope they all went to Vegeterreanean or whatever the freak it is, for the afterparty and had some veggie-burgers! I give that restaurant a year before it folds.

    Douchebags.

I have to take credit for the above post….it's just too doggone true!

Did Tim Ryan go and urinate on the side of a building and get arrested like he did while a student at Bowling Green?

And did he also threaten the arresting officer that his Dad would take care of him, true story)

Oh yeah did he also try and get this expunged from his record? He failed by the way….

I wish rock and rollers were running things in this country, politically speaking. They're almost as plugged-in as actors.

DEVO is short for "Devoid of intelligence."

  7. dumby October 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

what was it exactly that the black keys said that was "stupid" bashing bush or mccain or palin to help them become relevant again, sell any records, tour again, or get any movie or tv work?

also, the last time i checked, DEVO has been playing sold out shows and festivals for nearly the past decade.

personally, i am not interested in seeing a rock show mixed with any sort of political campaign…i like to think that my vote will NOT be based on politically charged media/entertainment stunts like this one. my vote will be cast based on which candidate is best aligned with what i stand for.

  8. All of you who have posted above me except for dumby is a dumby October 20th, 2008 at 10:16 am

Devo has never stopped selling out shows all over the world, they are always touring and writing music for your favorite television shows and movies. They sell out every show they play and they tour every year. Mark has done the music score for over 80 feature films, so many tv shows, and soooo many commercials. You are all idiots (except for you dumby).

and how are the black keys washed up, they are still new and also selling out tickets all over the world.

what are you doing with your life?

Good coverage man……..must have been a hell of a concert!

That's a great way to push the Democratic candidates. Can you see the Republicans doing anything like this ??

This was an incredible concert. The Black Keys were amazing. Chrissie Hynde played 3 songs "about Akron" including one about hearing the train whistle, which is so true. Devo surprised me by how good they sounded and by their energy.
I am so glad I got to see this Akron three act show.
