Pathetic Mailer in the 42nd House District

  • Author: Ben Keeler
  • Filed under: Moran / Nero
  • Date: Oct 11,2008

Exactly one week ago, residents of the 42nd House District (Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Munroe Falls, Silver Lake and Stow) received a political mailer. It was paid for Ohio Democratic Party and approved by challenger Mike Moran and party chairman and state representative Chris Redfern. The mailer contained typical Democrat lies, but this time they added a twist. They decided to go after incumbent Rich Nero's Italian heritage in the process. Here is the PDF of the trash they sent out (file loading a little slow right now).

Even the ABJ, who endorsed Mike Moran, had this to say yesterday: Democrats have been spinning the ridiculous story of Nero, appointed to a House seat in June, spending just a few hours at the Statehouse on his first day and then hightailing to Las Vegas. The truth is, Nero works as a health-care consultant for Oracle, schedules long set in advance. He first flew from an Oracle meeting in Vegas to Columbus, so he could be sworn into office the next morning and available for a critical vote on the Great Lakes Compact.

Nero joined the majority in approving an earlier measure that all but ensured the compact would win passage. Thus, he boarded a plane back to Vegas to make a presentation at the Oracle meeting.

I also detailed this back on June 19.

If I had any pull with the Beacon editorial board, I would tell them to officially rescind their endorsement of Moran, which I thought was wrong in the place. Moran and Redfern should be ashamed and should apologize to Nero (pictured with the garbage the ODP paid for). The two of them peddled a lie about Nero's business trip to Las Vegas and then determined it would also be appropriate to slam his heritage. Anything to try and win this race and the Ohio House back I guess. Telling blatant lies and infusing Italian ethnicity into this race for political gain is unacceptable. For someone who wants to represent the 42nd District, you would think Moran would want to represent everyone that lives there.

Pathetic. Being kind only because it is Saturday.

Have you seen the piece Kevin Coughlin did on Judy Hanna two years ago? Where she is shown with a burning American flag?

Everything in the Nero piece is true. If there are any lies, Nero can file a complaint with the non-partisan Ohio Elections Commission, and Moran will be found guilty.

But because the piece is completely accurate, nothing will happen to Mike Moran.

Wow what a hot-tempered little crybaby Richie Nero is. What kind of a race did he expect, Kent city council? He lost that race also.

Why is Rich Nero collecting a paycheck along with his 60,000 dollar a year House salary? Which job isn't he fully committing himself to? Why didn't he resign from his Oracle job when he was appointed to the House?

So he is making 30,000 from the taxpayers to do what, fly to Vegas?

He is collecting the salary, do the job and vote!

i love when republicans cry foul on bullshit adds, but when dems do it we're liberal crybabies. paybacks a bitch.

  4. David October 11th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

It doesn't even come close to this Republican mailer:

    http://www.buckeyestateblog.com/oh_house_92_more_disgusting_republican_mailings

    But thanks for playing!

  5. Lawrence October 11th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Mike Moran doesnt deserve to represent anyone with this ad.

  6. Ben Keeler October 11th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

PMK, I think you are just trying to help destroy a Republican who isnt an Arshinkoff ally. Just a wild guess.

I dont think I have even talked about any ads on either side this whole cycle with the exception of the Paris Hilton / B. Spears ad. Moran can run whatever he wants, so can anyone really, but if you do something like this you deserve to get called out.

Thanks David, no one cares about the 92nd District here. Or knows where it is. I clicked on your link. That ad is over the top and shouldnt have be put out. I can admit it. That the difference between me and a lot of people. You decided not to even address this ad. None of you did really, except PMK, who is just flat out lying, continung to spread the Vegas lie.

  7. knowledgable October 11th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Ben, where did you get that Mike endorsed this mailer? my guess is from rich. you have no right to attack mike for this mailer he did not create it nor did he approve it. your attacks are baseless and one-sided rich didnt approve the attacks on mike and has no control over orp, how then does mike have control over odp? it just doesn't make sense

  8. Pot Meet Kettle October 11th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

    Ben,

Let's just say I have been on the receiving end of Republican attacks so I don't have any sympathy towards Republicans crying foul. Especially Nero. He's collecting a paycheck, the least people expect is to be there to vote!

If there are any lies, Nero can file a complaint with the non-partisan Ohio Elections Commission, and Moran will be found guilty.

But because the piece is completely accurate, nothing will happen to Mike Moran.

  9. Wild Bill Cote October 11th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

I stopped into the Health forum in Cuyahoga Falls today, where Moran had a booth. Nero was nowhere to be seen.

I think he sees the writing on the wall.

That mailer is about as believeable as you are Alex, which is not much. At least he is actually earning money Alex, not extorting people for it.
Oh and yes Alex, you have been on the receiving end of the attacks because you deserve it Alex.

  12. Chris Dudley October 11th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

This is like an AP article just in reverse, going after a Democrat. Maybe that is why everyone is so mad. It shouldnt be legal to have something not favorable to a Democrat?

  13. Where's Alex? October 12th, 2008 at 9:53 am

Shouldn't the local party chair be more active in helping a Republican candidate in this campaign? Even more important is that retaining this seat will help keep the Republicans in the majority in Columbus. It seems that the local chair may even be trying to undermine the efforts of the state party in retaining this seat.

  14. Anonymous October 12th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

If he gets Kevin DeWine in as State Chair then he has undermined the State Party. The only way that I believe he has not is if Kevin DeWine renounces Alex Arshinkoff publicly.

  15. Where's Carol Klinger? October 12th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

It will be interesting to see how much money the Klinger-Coughlin New Summit Republicans will have raised for Nero. Sadly it is apparant the New Summit Republicans have done absolutely nothing to help Nero with his grass roots efforts except walk with him in a parade. Nero chose the wrong side and they left him out to dry!

It's evident the House Republicans give little chance of Nero winning since Republicans all over the State are already on television.

I understand they have also sent more mailers in the Cole race than the Nero race. They probably know Nero has not campaigned at all and has no chance of winning.

  16. I am Smarter than You October 12th, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Carol Klinger and the "New Summit Republicans" as you call them have presently raised just over $35,000 for Nero according to the Sec. of States reports. Alex and friends have not yet contributed to his campaign directly or through the OHRCC. Nero will probably raise another $20,000 at his fundraiser featuring John Kaisich on Tuesday. Oh yeah, and his broadcast TV ad buy starts on Weds. The Cleveland media market is the most expensive therefore none of the House candidates are on TV in this market at present time. Best guess Nero will file with around $100K raised on his pre-general filing, with around $20k cash on hand to bury Moran in the final week. This race is just getting starting, the polling done last week has this race with in the margin of error.

  17. Big Al Your Loser Pal October 12th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

The blame should be put squarely on Alex for doing nothing but to hurt the party statewide as it may lose control of the House due to his pettiness.

  18. Rep81 October 12th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

This is the type of crap that cost Widowfield the Clerk of Courts race. Mailers that take away from the issues at hand and distract voters with these petty and immature arguments does not play well in this district.

Nero has a reason to be mad and upset at the mailer. First, the accusations are not true. He voted earlier in the day for the Great Lakes Water Compact and once he knew the Senate was approving it with only minor adjustments, he flew back to make his previous commitment (Is Moran against people holding jobs in the 42nd?) Second, the bill passed 92-0. It was never in danger. Third, it does insult the Italian heritage and all voters in the 42nd district.

Moran's response has been pathetic and as the ABJ said he should be embarassed.

  19. knowledgable October 12th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Hey I am smarter, you're wrong morans been on tv for two weeks and already has his second ad up.

  20. I am Smarter than You October 12th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Moran has been on cable tv, not broadcast. Cable ads are cheap for a reason. They are pretty worthless…Kinda like Moran.

  21. Anonymous October 12th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Alex early on tried to make money from Nero's campaign but where the money would have ended up who knows?
The petty little tyrant in Canal Place will soon end up in the ash bin of history and we cannot wait for that to happen. Oh and Alex, were you waddling your fat ass down main street with a Nero shirt on? How about driving the PARTIES ESCALADE down the road with Nero signs? Not that either? Hmmm. How about going around doing lit drops? Well Carol has done that but I thought you said you'd be a full time Chair? That is your job you know. Not delegate it on to some old balding Prune who catches people about ready to go home to get things done and says you gotta go to headquarters, nevermind the family.
You won't be able to point a finger to anybody and say it's their fault. Your just going to have to accept it's your own.

  22. Chris Dudley October 12th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

    I love these threads.

  23. knowledgable October 12th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

regardless moran is on tv nero is not moran has odp ohdc and third party groups supporting his candidacy nero does not moran was endorsed by police nero was not

  24. Where's Alex? October 12th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Alex's feet need to be put under fire by Dolan, Husted, and Dewine! If this was Dennis Robart (thank God it wasn't), Alex would be campaigning vigorously. His candidate didn't win so he took his ball and went home. People should remember this whenever he talks about getting Republican candidates elected.

  25. No you are not smarter than me! October 12th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

I believe the word is 'within', not 'with in. You freaking idiot!

This race is not going to be won by money but by grass roots. Moran has been everywhere, he's gone door to door, and Nero has done absolutely nothing. The House knows it, and they are not going to throw money at a wasted effort.

Regarding the expensive Cleveland media market, (ooooh you really are smart you douche), the House has already been on tv there running ads for House Republicans.

Oh yes jackass, the House Republicans have also been running ads in the Columbus media market as well….weeks ago in fact. Last I checked that was a pretty expensive media market.

You can determine the level of support a candidate has by the money being spent, and Nero has received zilch. Even Randy Cole has received more then Nero.

It is humerous to know the New Summit Republicans have claimed this race as their own because there is such a pathetic effort being made. All they do is complain with no effort to back it up. Way to go "30 Percenters"!

The House has pulled out of this race. They have spent more money on Cole than Nero because Cole is actually campaigning. Nero has maybe ten signs up in the district, and those were placed without permission.

  26. Clueless in Cincity October 12th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

McCain is the only Republican who might win this year.

Oh and it's arshinkopf's fault Schuering, Stivers, etc. all lose…whatever.

Gallup Daily: Obama-McCain Gap NarrowsObama leads, 50% to 43%USA Election 2008 Gallup Daily Americas Northern America PRINCETON, NJ — The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking report finds registered voters preferring Barack Obama (50%) to John McCain (43%) when asked who they would vote for if the presidential election were held today.

These results, based on Oct. 9-11 polling, represent a narrowing of Obama's lead over McCain. Obama led by double-digits for three consecutive days last week, but now his advantage is down to seven percentage points. Obama has led in each of the last three individual days' polling, but by less than double-digits each day, suggesting that the race is, in fact, tightening.

    Likely Voter Estimates

Obama's current advantage is slightly less when estimating the preferences of likely voters, which Gallup will begin reporting on a regular basis between now and the election.

  27. I am Still Smarter than You October 12th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Nero has been out campaigning just like Moran. He has been to my daughter's house in Cuy. Falls twice. He has more yard signs up than Moran too. His grass-roots campaign is not to be underestimated either, he has knocked on a lot of doors and he has been to a dozen or so senior citizen living facilies too. Your assertion that Columbus has pulled out this race is simply wrong and your dumb ass will be proven wrong by this time next week. And your affection for Randy Cole is laughable, it is almost like you might actually be Randy. He is going to lose, and lose bad. The dems are going to start running an ad this week about Randy Cole being hand picked by Arshinkoff. They have video of him refering to Alex as "coach" and "daddy." People are going to love that..This will be a great example of why douche-bags like Randy Cole should not be elected. Furthermore, the New Summit Republicans have been out campaigning for numerous candidates, rumor has it they have even been down to Republican HQ volunteering.

  28. Spellchecker/Grammar Check October 12th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

    1. Humorous not humerous.

    2. a) This race is not going to be won by money but by grass roots. b) You can determine the level of support a candidate has by the money being spent, and Nero has received zilch. Even Randy Cole has received more then Nero.

The first part does not mesh with the second.
Will money matter or will it not?

  29. anonymous too October 12th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

So sad to read this partisan bickering. None of it helps the Republicans but probably helps the Democrats. And nowhere is there any mention of local issues, you know, the thing the average voter might actually care about. It's Ohio's version of the Hatfields and the McCoys.

  30. Anonymous October 12th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

It is not a rumor that they were volunteering at Republican HQ, they WERE in fact there and helping. When Alex came out of his hole to see what was going on he turned around and went back in his hole to hide from them because he was to embarassed to thank them.
On the money issue he has received zilch from Alex when in fact Alex tried to make money from Rich and his name.

  31. I am Still Smarter than You!/Spellchecker Grammercheck October 13th, 2008 at 6:02 am

Your assertion that Columbus has pulled out this race is simply wrong and your dumb ass will be proven wrong by this time next week.

(I believe it is "Columbus has pulled out OF this race" idiot.

Columbus knows he has not done ANY campaigning, and he might have ten signs up throughtout the district!

    This race is so over.

  32. New summit Idiots October 13th, 2008 at 6:06 am

Once again Mike Douglas and the Freaking Urinal editorial page come to the defense of the New Summit Republicans!!!

NSR goes down to HQ for one night, make ten phone calls, and claim they are doing everything!

  33. New summit Idiots October 13th, 2008 at 10:30 am

Congrats on receiving the Stupidest Quote OF The Year Award!!!!!

And the winning quote is: "with around $20k cash on hand to bury Moran in the final week."

Nero's going to bury his opponent with one mailer. That's funny!

Speaking of stupid, why would Nero go back to that same girl's house in twice?

    Close legislative races
Attack ads unpopular but effective, party official says
    Monday, October 13, 2008 2:57 AM
    By Jim Siegel

    THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The blue banner on the wall at Rep. Ted Celeste's campaign headquarters in Grandview Heights still reads, "All positive all the time."

Celeste said his campaign is sticking to his principles even as he is pummeled by negative Republican mail pieces featuring him standing with shadow outlines of strippers.

"The only way we're going to get people to believe that you can do it is to keep doing it," he said of positive campaigning, before holding up one of the attack mailings. "These folks, this is all they know how to do. They think the creative part is making these pretty pictures."

In many competitive legislative races, the mud is slinging early and often, as Democrats and Republicans struggle for control of the Ohio House. Democrats need a net four-seat gain to regain control of the chamber for the first time since 1994.

Two years ago, House Republicans held back on attacking Democratic candidate Ray Pryor over his opposition to a bill that would ban gay adoption. Why? House Speaker Jon Husted, a Kettering Republican who is adopted, his then-chief of staff, Scott Borgemenke, and a majority of legislative Republicans agreed with Pryor's position, stalling the proposal from serious consideration.

But this year, a mailing featuring a sad child and two groom figurines says Pryor "isn't looking out for our children's best interests."

The reversal is easy to explain.

"We didn't need to run the ad last time," said Borgemenke, chief strategist for the House Republican Campaign Committee. "Nobody wants to use it. I don't like it."

When the majority holds 60 of 99 seats in the House, decisions on whether to hold back some attacks are easier to make, Borgemenke said. When one district can decide which party controls the chamber — such as in Rep. John Schlichter's race against Pryor in the 85th District in southern Ohio, where Schlichter is under fire for owing more than $200,000 in back taxes — "those decisions are tougher."

The Pryor ad has even drawn attention from candidates in other races. "I hope that doesn't reflect on all Republicans. I know I don't feel that way," said Republican Tim Rankin, who is challenging Celeste in Franklin County's 24th District.

Asked about the strip-club ads House Republicans are running against Celeste, Rankin said, "I've told them what I think about their stuff. Let's just say I spend my money differently."

When it comes to the art of political advertising, few in Ohio have more expertise than Borgemenke, who has worked Republican legislative races for 16 years. He is considered very good at his job — and his job this year is to make sure that House Republicans hit 50 and stay in the majority.

"I don't think it's a good thing for the system. Nobody feels good about this," he said of the negative ads. But in House races where most voters don't know either candidate, Borgemenke has learned, "It just works."

He has seen focus groups where people initially are turned off by a negative ad but are later influenced by it. "The feeling (at the TV) and the feeling (later) are very disjointed."

Borgemenke also knows candidates often will try to distance themselves from attack ads, and occasionally throw him under the bus.

"The winners are going to say that they would have won by more had you not done what you did. The losers are going to say: You lost the race for me." Very rarely is either scenario true, he said.

In Franklin County, Rep. Jim McGregor, R-Gahanna, and Michael H. Keenan, GOP candidate for the 22nd Ohio House District, said that they get no input into the negative ads created by Borgemenke's team.

"I prefer the philosophy that you never use your opponent's name," McGregor said. "The parties generally feel it's better to use your opponent's name and point out all the deficiencies you can find."

Asked about ads attacking his opponent, John P. Carney, Keenan said, "I don't like that kind of campaign." However, he also has been hit several times by a union-led group supporting his Democratic opponent. "When I got fired on five or six times in a row before that came out, you lose a little bit of your sensitivity to it."

Borgemenke's assessment is blunt: "I don't think Keenan would have run this campaign on television. I don't think he would have a chance to win if he didn't."

Republicans are getting hit too, often by outside groups working to elect Democrats.

McGregor has been attacked for his environmental record, even though he is endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. "There is not a better friend for clean water at the Statehouse than Jim McGregor. And there's not a better friend when it comes to clean energy," said veteran Statehouse environmental advocate Jack Shaner.

Borgemenke said this year's attack ads on either side are no worse than in past years. The difference, he said, is that the ads hit sooner because so many voters are voting early.

"This is not personal with anybody. We don't make people's opinions. We point out the differences. I don't know if it's going to work or not."

  35. Spellchecker/Grammar Check October 13th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

  36. You are dumb October 14th, 2008 at 12:04 am

Nero has worked very hard, he is kicking Moran's ass in yards signs, Nero easily has a 4-1 advantage. This race is with in the margin of error, which does not say much for the Moran campaign since he has whored himself out to the special interests to the amount of $200k +. You'd think he'd be up by 20 points, nope the little man is with in the margin of error. Not sure who wins this one yet, rumor is that Nero's tv ads start on Thurs. on broadcast. We'll see if Moron can match it. Time will tell.
