Oliver Stone To Release "W." In October

  • Author: Kyle Kutuchief

As a Democrat, I'm skeptical of whether election year political movies help or hurt our cause. In 2004, Fahrenheit 911 was supposed to energize the electorate not to vote for President Bush, but in the end it seemed to rally the conservative base around their hatred of Michael Moore and Bush-bashing in general. Oliver Stone is set to release "W." on October 17, 2008. Supposedly the trailer leaked out and there isn't an official website yet for the movie.

Back to the reality of the Bush presidency. I listened to President Bush's speech in Cleveland yesterday. It was largely uneventful and left me asking why he hadn't done anything about energy over the past 8 years. One line in particular from Bush's speech jumped out at me: "But I think it makes sense for government to trust you with your money. See, I'd rather have you spending your money than the government spending your money." This is just a remarkable argument the President has been able to get away with for the past 8 years. He cuts taxes, doesn't pay the bills, and just continues to raise our national deficit. He cuts taxes and expands government.

This morning, President Bush signed the Housing Bill to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The bill signing was done in private with no media. The NY Times reports, "the bill raises the national debt ceiling to $10.6 trillion, an increase of $800 billion. The bill also creates significant liabilities and risks for taxpayers, that are virtually impossible to calculate."

Fiscal conservatives have to be so disappointed by the past 8 years. It is going to be the challenge of the next President to clean up this mess and try to balance our budget.

    Ludicrous, isn't it?

Junior wants to trust us with our own money…..after it has been reduced in value by almost half because of his national credit card spree.

    What a guy.

Personally I am against bailing people out of their own economic messes. If you buy a big house and lose your job you should follow these steps in order to keep your home and your family afloat: 0) Start looking for a job. 1) Stop buying cigarettes. 2) Stop Buying booze. 3) cancel all the non-necessary items in your life TiVo, Cable, Cell phones, etc. 4) Continue to look for a job 5) You may have to take a job that is "beneath" you for a while. I know a good plumber looking for extra help digging ditches. 6) Start to sell all the unessary crap you have: the 2 jet skies, the 2 4-wheelers, the BMW, the Lexus SUV. 7) Reign in your credit to a controllable number. Sit down and explain to your kids that times are rough now and that you may have to tighten your belts. They will understand, family really is important to them.

Once you get back on your feet you will have a better sense to not spend so much money on useless crap and may even be able to keep your house in the process.

I had a conversation with a gal during a summer carnival. She is huge Democrat and was complaining that she does not have health care. During the conversation, I learned that she does not have a job, she answered her blackberry three times during the conversation, and was dressed in high end clothing and Nike sneakers. I suggested to her that he money she spends on the blackberry could probably cover the cost of health care and she could still have a lower end phone for calls etc. She was floored. She wanted the government to give her free health care. This is the world we live. When people complain about not having enough money for the basic necessities, just nod and observe. You will see the same person light up a Camel, use a $300 cell phone, get into their SUV. People do not know what poor is.

Don't you think the NYTimes would have raised an even higher cautionary flag if Bush hadn't signed it? Of course the taxpayers are going to help pay for this–they've been bankrolling those two institutions since their inception.

I feel genuinely sorry for those people who have been victims of banking greed and corporate profiteering. For the others who were speculating or stupidly overextending themselves and/or taking financial risks that made no sense I don't have much pity for them. See the above comments of
The Nose. As with most legislation, this bill is full of compromises and some new home buyers will actually benefit from the bill's provisions and the current crisis in lending.
Ironic. Maybe some of the past and current board members of these fine institutions would care to donate some of their astronomical salaries to a fund for the displaced. Or maybe they could spend a few years in jail, where some of them indeed belong.

Yeah but now everyone gets to keep their house. How nice.

    Anne,

Do you feel frustrated that the President chose not to veto this bill?

Im glad this movie is being made, it helped the Republicans when 911 was made by the "idiot" (Michael Moore). Im sure this will make it just as much easier for MCain and Palin to get into the White House in which they deserve. God help us if we get a democrat no less that has no experience.
