Ohio AG Race Update

Time to take a wack at a ridiculous premise some of our friends (channeling my inner John McCain) on the left have come up with regarding the AG race.

They are saying that with this pick the Ohio GOP has out "Danned Dann." Really? So let us look at this "scandal."

Link: In 1991 Crites, serving as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, hired a woman named Brenda L Dodrill as an assistant U.S. attorney “despite the fact that she had been licensed to practice law only since November 1988 and had no trial experience.”

And why would he do that? Because Dodrill was sleeping with Columbus Mayor Buck Rinehart who was still married to his wife Carol at the time.

Rinehart admitted his affair in 1990. He separated from his wife in August of 1990. They were granted a dissolution in January 1991. Brenda Dodrill didn’t resign from the City of Columbus until April 1991, and wasn’t made an assistant U.S. Attorney until after that.

What does Crites have to do with that?

It isn't uncommon to hire someone to that position three years out of law school. Dodrill stayed on when the Clinton appointee took over, so she must have been doing a good job, and in fact never would have passed the Justice Department background check and what not if she wasn't qualified for the job.

Again, what does Crites have to do with it besides hiring a qualified person for a position as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the civil division? There was no political favor to be had because Rinehart was a lame duck mayor. Crites has been a professional prosecutor for the last 21 years. Something you would look for in an AG. Trying to link all this together is a stretch at best. At best. Crites is more qualified for the job than the seemingly annual candidate Cordray and this is just trying to be used as a diversion. Comparable to Marc Dann and the way he ran things? Not a chance.

This is a pretty sad attack on a woman who served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney admirably. Perhaps if the Ohio Democrats turned their focus from outdated oppo research in to picking better candidates interested in playing musical chairs in Columbus, this situation wouldn’t exist the first place.

Already on the case: WMD and NaugBlog.

Do you know how to say 'sitting duck'?

They didn't waste any time bringing out the slime and IMO it is unnecessary. Cordray has such a good advantage in money and name recognition.

Makes me wonder what Cordray is hiding.

The inability of the Ohio Republican Party to draft a decent candidate in a timely fashion is another indicator that it is going to be a bad year for you guys. I don't expect any of you to admit it, but you have to be disappointed. There are so many Republicans that lost last cycle who have some name ID and experience running statewide. Instead you get some guy named D. Michael Crites, who nobody knows.

    Why wouldnt we admit it?

Do you ever read right wing blogs or even what I write? I have written many times here about our disapointment in getting a top tier candidate.

"Instead you get 'some guy' named D. Michael Crites." You talk like he is homeless or something.

Micheal Crites? did he have something to do with the diansour movie–Jurasic Park?

Why would you admit it? The guy could be a diamond in the rough and turnout to be a decent candidate. It is tough to cheer for a candidate you aren't excited about (see John Kerry), but sometimes you have to rally around the party. Plus, he is taking your advice and saying that he will only run for one term and that "A.G. doesn't stand for aspiring Governor."

I think Crites can make a race of it despite CW

typical fake smear job about nothing

Yes, Ben, you have stated your disappointment about not fielding a 'big name' candidate for AG before. From the bio, he sounds like someone who deserves the respect of being listened to, at the very least.

Kyle, once upon a time "some guy named Obama" decided to run.

    :-)

Cordray has nothing to lose in this scenario, even if he were to not win AG, he's still treasurer…Crites does have the advantage of not being an elected, it could work for him and if people were being honest, very few in many parts of Ohio knew who Rich Cordray was when he ran for Treasurer. He campaigned hard and I would expect him to this time too.

For the record, because looking back I wasnt sure I was clear: I am not saying Crites is a weak candidate. I was saying there is nothing wrong with expressing regret over the fact that so many "top tier" candidates passed on the race.

  12. ohioarn July 27th, 2008 at 12:42 am

    Gary,
Cordray is hiding the fact he is in the top 5 recipients of dirty money from Tom Noe's pay-to-play pack. He comes across as a John Edwards-style "pretty populist", but his ambition will stop at nothing.
    Watchout!

  13. Mark McNally July 28th, 2008 at 6:26 am

Cordray is already an AG: Aspiring Governor.

Crites is an experienced prosecutor who actually wants to be AG. He's not using the office as a stepping stone, like Richy Rich.
