Politics.Ohio.com Interviews Governor Strickland

Yesterday morning, Kyle and I had the privilege to interview Governor Strickland in his office at the Ohio Statehouse. It was a great opportunity and one we will not soon forget. Thank you to Governor Strickland for taking the time out of his day to sit down with us and discuss various topics and issues.
The interview is broken up into four segments. Below are the first two. In the first video, Governor Strickland talks about bringing both parties together in his office at a round table, which happens to be where our interview takes place. Strickland talked about some of the accomplishments that have come of the bipartisan talks right there.
During the second clip Governor Strickland talks about the recently signed Great Lakes Compact and the advantage that Ohio has with our access to fresh water.
On a personal note, I have to say that I was very impressed with Governor Strickland. He knew that I did not vote for him in 2006 and am a Republican blogger but still took time to meet with me. He took the time to show us around the office (while pointing out many fascinating things) and talk to the two of us off camera afterwards for a good length of time when he could have just skipped out when the filming stopped. It was one of those days you will always remember.
Turn your speakers up and enjoy. Please check back tomorrow for the second half of the interview.

That is really cool he sat down with you guys.
Looking forward to Part II
I am very impressed with you guys getting this interview! Nice work.
I also look forward to Part II. Did they ask for your questions beforehand or give you any guidelines for what can't be asked?
I'd love to interview Gov. Strickland but there is no way he would agree to it.
Politics aside Stricklnad is an impressive dude. Great job gentlemen
I am more removed from Ohio politics, but I have never been impressed with Strickland. But this is the closest look I have achieved and he sounds pretty good. Ohio is in a very tough position and it will certainly take a leader that brings everyone together. He certainly carries that approach/desire to work with everyone.
I happened to speak briefly to the governor a few years ago at an event. About his personality, I came away with two things: he was approachable and accommodating, ridiculously so.
Nice work, gents - glad you got the opportunity.
Really interesting guys. I have to admit that I have been away from Ohio for so long that I sometimes don't know much about the political scene there (aside from what I hear from friends and family). That said, this more intimate discussion is a really good opportunity for insight into the governor's thoughts on tackling many issues confronting Ohio. I am very impressed to hear Gov. Strickland address many of these questions.
Regarding the GL Compact, I can certainly see why Strickland would support it. And as a person living in the 'unsustainable' Southwest, I take some issue. On one hand, I have said the same thing about the water issue and agree. On the other hand, I think those same SW states are going to be leaders in Wind/Solar power. I don't think we should necessarily get to hoard that and make the Midwest suffer (assuming we reach a point where we can store/transport those forms readily). From a federal level, I don't agree with an every-state-for-itself approach. We need comprehensive solutions to the energy crisis. And we will need a comprehensive approach to the water crisis of the next generations.
I don't know how often the governor has spoken face-to-face with bloggers, but it seems a smart way to reach those who only read their news online, whatever the online source is.
The fact that you scored an interview at all speaks well for the dual political character of this blog and your resourcefulness in obtaining the interview. Knowing the guidelines for the interview would be interesting.
As governor, Strickland needs to maintain a balance between promoting Ohio's best interests and acting in conjunction with all the states to promote America's best interests regarding our access to Lake Erie. Let's hope he can fulfill this balance through the GL Compact.
[...] Most times as a political blogger you are lucky to be included in a conference call where you might get to ask a question, and normally if you are not of the same party? Your access is pretty limited. My conservative friend, Ben Keeler, traveled down to Columbus with his co-blogger, Kyle Kutuchief, the liberal part of "The Point" to interview Governor Ted Strickland. [...]
First, Did Nestle ever succeed in diverting GL water into their bottled products? Is there any water diverted at the moment? I seem to remember Akron fighting this because it sits outside the declared zone, but Akron complained enough so that it would become an exception to the rule. How many other exceptions are there? Secondly, Mr. Chuck, it's more than just thirsty people. It's an environmental issue as well. Should we not just bottle up some water and send it to Kenya where they have little clean water? Lakes do disappear.Look at Russia. Lastly,he didn't ask you to take your coats off?
[...] Conservative blogger Ben Keeler and some lefty guy interviewed him here. [...]
Thanks for the opportunity to sit in as you talked with Governor Strickland at his circular office conference table. I'm eager to see and hear parts 3 & 4.
What strikes me as an underlying theme is the value of "civil" civil discourse.
The two of you model this with your blogging. The Governor has demonstrated the importance of "civil" civil discourse as workable part of the dynamics of successful Legislative action and in Legislative / Executive interactions.
No one of us is as smart as all of us together. When we come to the table with a principled intention to find workable solutions, then we have at least the possibility that we can find ways to cherish individuals as individuals while acknowledging the necessity and role of societal governance.
Keep up the good work and hold fast to providing "civil" civil discourse even as Ohio gets flooded with less-than-civil discourse this election year.
We have stated that someday we will have the ultimate resource that evryone will need—WATER. Howevcer as Chuck indirectly alludes to will it become a battle of my rescource(oil, windpower, coal, water, etc.) vs. your resource thus not being of the benefit we hope for this region?
Hey……the fact that you got into his office for this interview is awesome ! How'd you guys manage to do that?
Sounds smooth….like he's done it many times before.
Kyle and Ben: Great job on getting a sit down interview with the Governor! I believe an interview like this with two interviewers from opposite sides of the political spectrum is much more valuable to the voters than the standard mainstream media interviews. I'm glad to hear Governor Strickland is committed to working with both parties to get things accomplished in this great state. Much like the idea behind this site, people as a whole benefit when all sides come to the table. Great work. Hopefully the Beacon and other mainstream media outlets can learn a thing or two from you guys (but my guess is they won't).
Maybe your interview crashed YouTube with so many hits. Anyways awesome job as usual for you 2. I really appreciate all the hard work you guys put into this and your 2 sites. Excellent reporting.
Love the approach guys. Agree entirely with James V. and others above. Looking forward to sitting down to digest this later.
Great job guys. The GL Compact has been a hot button topic for several years, and it was great to get his perspective on its long overdue signing. This is really good stuff!
Hey guys….did Strickland 'snow' you with his charm and surroundings ? Come on….he's not that great a gov…..
Kyle and Ben,
Great job scoring this interview. I would like to see more interviews like this which cause readers to really consider issues and not just soundbytes. While I understand Chuck's concern about state's being too protectionist of their resources, at this point, I see no other option for Ohio and for Gov. Strickland than to take significant measures such as the GL Compact to protect Ohio's most significant asset.
The SW cant build water. Ohio can build any wind or solar or whatever they are doing out there. There is a difference.
Awesome interview, Thanks to Governor Strickland
You should interview Michelle Obama!
The Great Lakes Compact is a great move for Ohio and I was glad to see all parties come together to support it. In the future we will be glad we signed it along with other states that border the Great Lakes.
In response to the poll question, Voinovich would be interesting.
rad shades keeler
Thanks…..they're kind of new sunglasses.
BBT, solid point. The SW can't just build water. Ohio can build wind power and all that stuff.
Great job guys - love the approach!
very nice interview. and good written thoughts too. enjoyable and informative.
Great job guys
