Edwards Endorses

It was a beautiful sight yesterday in Grand Rapids, Michigan. John Edwards broke his long time silence and finally endorsed Senator Obama. It was brilliant that they chose Michigan as the backdrop for the announcement. This is the beginning of the Obama campaign reaching our to Michigan and Florida Democrats to help bring them in. Edwards is respected by Democrats for his dedication to the issues that matter to labor unions and the working poor. Michigan was the right place to maximize the positive impact of this endorsement. As an Obama supporter, I was overjoyed by the text message I got from the Obama campaign notifying me of the endorsement. (text HOPE to 62262 if you want updates also)
As MSNBC's Domenico Montanaro pointed out, the timing of the announcement could not have been better for Obama. It buried all the stories of Hillary's win in West Virginia and a continuation of the divisive hypothetical nonsense of whether blue collar white voters will support Obama. The Obama coalition is going to continue to grow as the party coalesces around him. The various constituencies that support Senator Clinton will follow.

Were you really overjoyed. That sounds a bit over the top.
He should have gone to see the poor people in Pennsylvania.
Alex, overjoyed is something of an understatement actually. As a Democrat, I have been waiting for months for Edwards to endorse. My friends and I kept guessing as to when he would do it and have been wrong over and over again. Part of me thinks that Obama knew Edwards was going to endorse for a while and decided to play this card now after the dismal West Virginia showing. The timing is extremely helpful.
I hope Edwards is the VP Pick, though I dont think he will.
He did wonders in 2004, helping in no southern states, not in north carolina, and not even in his own precinct.
Edwards has no executive record of experience. He didnt do good in the primaries, he flopped (being generous) in the 2004 debate, etc.
I will say the timing was good to knock Hillary's WV story out of the news, but you guys told me that didnt matter anyhow, so…..I dont really get it. I think Kyle and other Democrats think Edwards has more impact than he does. He showed in 2004 he had none and basically showed the same this year.
So I hope Obama takes Edwards as his VP.
Ben, Edwards is respected by a lot of Democrats. This is a Democratic Primary. All that matters at this point is what Kyle and the other Democrats think.
I missed it on TV. How did his hair look?
The timing was perfect. It took attention away from Obama's lousy showing in W.Va and added fuel to the presses new line that the game is over. I wonder what Edwards wants in return? Call me a cynic but I dont think his only motive was what is best for the country. Hopefully Obama didnt promise him a cabinet position.
I cant wait for the next regime to be in place in Wash. If MCain wins he will enter an era of bi-partisanship with the Dem. majority. The result will be legislation crafted by the special interest groups of the rich and poor in which the working class of America will foot the bill. The new 5 year farm bill is a perfect example of both sides getting close to what they want and working suckers footing the bill.
If the Dems win the White House it will be the same outcome only more expensive for us those of us paying the bill
Larry D., the hair was fantastic. He made the Breck company proud.
Good post Kyle.
Ben says…."I will say the timing was good to knock Hillary's WV story out of the news, but you guys told me that didnt matter anyhow.."
Ben, WVa doesn't really matter in the larger picture. The importance of Edwards' timely endorsement is seen in the recapture of the media narrative. If only for a couple of days. The Knee Padders just can't get enough of their own race-baiting and racial smearing by association.
Edwards' endorsement stopped the ugliness for a bit.
But he's a lightweight who did more harm than good for Kerry.
Either Edwards waited until the primary was decided to give his endorsement–kind of weasely–or Obama held him off to fend off some minor bad press because he knew the endorsement didn't really mean much.
