Gore / Carbon Offsets 2008

  • Author: Ben Keeler
  • Date: Mar 31,2008

Due to the current Democratic infighting, many in the party are looking for a quick solution that will end their mess. More and more one name keeps popping up. Al Gore. Gore himself keeps saying he is not going to run, but the drumbeat is getting louder (Joe Klein of Time is one of the most recent to write about this).

While I don't think this will happen, it is still interesting to talk about. The Democrats are always talking how every vote should count. Al Gore has not been on the ballot for any primary or caucus in 2008. If Howard Dean and his braintrust did decide to approcach Gore and if he accepted, all Democratic voters would be disenfranchised!! Not just voters in Michigan and Florida, as is currently the case. Only the people who still wake up every day convinced that the 2000 election was stolen and wrote in Al Gore's name this year would have their votes counted. In addition, the Democrats would be potentially be pushing aside both the first female and first African-American president. Some questions: Would the donors who have so supported Obama keep their money coming to Gore? Would he be able to convert votes against him in 2000 into votes for him in 2008? Do Democrats want to take a second chance on another charmless candidate (Mondull, Dukakis, Gore, Kerry)? Would Gore himself want to run and risk losing again? But don't forget, Richard Nixon ran as an incumbent VP and lost narrowly only to come back 8 years later and win.

From an article I was reading today: Former Gore aides now believe he could emerge as a compromise candidate acceptable to both camps at the party's convention in Denver during the last week of August.

Seriously? We know Hillary Clinton won't be like "Oh sure, Al, I will defer to you." I don't think St. Obama would back down either. Plus, if Gore did run, I don't know if the momentum could be kept up on one of the biggest scams this country has ever seen - "carbon offsets."

Two Ohio blogs also weigh in on the Gore possibility: Nix Guy (via AOL) on the right, and De Magno Opere on the left.

Kyle's Header
Kyle: Ben, I gotta weigh in here and correct the record on Al Gore's environmental credentials. This week, the top vote getter in 2000 (Gore) will be launching a $300 million campaign to try and push the country to address climate change. The ad campaign will feature Pat Robertson, Al Sharpton, Nancy Pelosi, and Newt Gingrich. Here is their debut ad:

Are you now denying global warming through your mocking of the man who should be finishing his 2nd term in office?

  2. The Reverend March 31st, 2008 at 8:37 am

A so-called liberal media head….Joe Klein….writes a throw away puff piece suggesting Al Gore could be the Dem candidate somehow. Joe Klein's assholery is well known in reality based circles.

Think about the brilliance of the Knee Padder Klein. The Dems have 2 extremely popular presidential candidates. Klein's conjecture about this situation? Dismiss both of these wildly popular candidates and insert Al Gore.

This kind of tripe is why I call mainmedia….Knee Pad Media.

Klein was simply meeting his deadline by reaching deep down, or up, into the deep and bloated bowels of his own bullpucky.

    Joe Klein is a wanker.

    From you Telegraph link….

"The prospect of a new Gore candidacy was raised last week in Time magazine by Joe Klein, the doyen of American political writers, and discussed on the main cable news networks, CNN, Fox and MSNBC."

Klein, a wanker, raises the issue in the first place, as is his Knee Pad custom. Other media, on their knees waiting for establishment commands, takes the issue wanker Klein raises out of thin air, and echoes it around the Wankosphere.

None of this has ANY credibility…..no quotes from Gore….no reasonable justification in light of the two existing very popular Dem candidates. But wankers will be wankers and Joe Klein is a charter member.

As this Klein wank is echoed and spun off into Wingnutland….it will be used as simply another opportunity to bash and mock the Democrat elected to the presidency in 2000.

That was Klein's purpose for submitting his totally fabricated column in the first place.

Just because someone has environmental credentials that doesnt mean that they should be president. A lot of women in my neighborhood go bird watching every week and also recycle household goods and belong to the Sierra Club. Should one of them be Gore's running mate?

  4. JoBoo March 31st, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Burger King is right…people want a quick fix to this just like everything else…putting Gore in the middle, or giving him the nomination would be illegal in my mind…let the process work itself out…

  5. Ben Keeler March 31st, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Wow…JoBoo and I agree on something.

Good point Joe M….made me laugh.

Kyle get your trash video out of my post. I dont care who is in it. The only thing I said about Gore's environmental record is that carbon offsets are a scam. They are.

And Rev, I would also say that I agree that this whole thing is not credible. But fun to discuss. I actually dont think Gore would do it and risk losing again…and he might not be able to own anymore carbon offset companies as a public office holder.

Ben, Newt Gingrich is one of the most articulate people in the conservative movement. I'd think you'd want to be on board with him.

  7. Anne March 31st, 2008 at 4:48 pm

Having dark horse or unlikely candidates win the eventual nomination is not unprecendented, but seems highly unlikely in this case. Gore does not have enough popular support and would have even less by usurping Obama or Clinton. Let him continue on his environmental way where he could conceivably do more good. Let the Democratic show go on.

President George W. Bush is a Constitutionally elected President, both terms. If you are going to keep that going then I might as well as say this. bill clinton and George W. Bush do have something in common. Neither were elected with a mojority vote their first terms in office.

  9. Kyle Kutuchief March 31st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Phantom, I believe in the merits of the Electoral College and its role in giving smaller states a more fair representation. I was just stating the fact that Gore had more votes.

Carbon credits are the latest version of "indulgences" sold by the Catholic Church in the 1500's. This whole scam is nothing new. It's actually a pretty good idea that Gore latched on, as it is quite profitable and allows for his followers to carry on in their Gaia-unfriendly behaviour but assuage their guilty consciouses by giving a few dollars. Well done, Mr. Gore.

    Rev:

Why would Gore want to be president? Too much hassle, way less pay, and that presidential limo must get awful mileage.

  11. angry conserv March 31st, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Kudos–to the producers of the presidential election. The cage match between Hillary and Obama has been great theater but it is growing stale. By introducing Gore we truly have a three ring circus. We can all envision Gore playing the role of Vince McMann. While he is the broker at any moment he may rip his shirt off and rassle that nomination for himself. Hopefully this venture will be as profitable as global warming has been for Al

  12. cleveland republican March 31st, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Does anyone really care what Al Gore thinks or has to say? I didnt think so. Wait, wasnt he the guy who invented the internet? As long as its still snowing in April I dont want to hear about any kind of global warming.

  13. fred March 31st, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Rumor has it that Roger Clements will sign sometime after the All-Star game and pitch for the global warming team.

  14. largebill March 31st, 2008 at 10:50 pm

This, sadly, is a real possibility. Gore would be a formidable candidate for a couple reasons. Primarily, the fact that he will have had 8 years of a fawning media crying that he was robbed in 2000 (Sorry Kyle but he lost - and if you discount voter fraud he also lost the popular vote). Secondly, he has the advantage of not having been beat up in a primary contest. Add in lots of publicity from a Grammy, Oscar and Nobel prize all for highlighting a fake problem (man made global warming) and you have a candidate in a great position. He has to stay out of the fray so he can throw up his hands at the convention and say "I didn't want to run, but I'll do it for . . . blah, blah, blah." Gore failed divinity school and served in the military as a journalist yet the media considers him a genius and calls the guy with a master degree from Harvard who served as a fighter pilot (Bush) a dunce. Go figure. Unfortunately, a good percentage of the electorate don't have a clue.

  15. Chuck April 1st, 2008 at 8:42 am

Ben, why not talk about Godzilla, fairies, or other fantasy-land things. There is ZERO chance of that Gore scenario happening. Talking about Gore being the nominee is WAY more absurd than acting like HRC has a chance (HRC has about a 3% chance).

As far as carbon credits, I don't know. Seems like something needs to be done. But I do love how the conservatives are suddenly railing against those that will make profits from a new climate-focused economy. The irony and hypocrisy is laughable.

Where are these conservatives complaining about the insane profiteering coming from the DEATH AND BLOOD of the Iraq war????

  16. Ford MS April 1st, 2008 at 10:40 am

Ben, it seems the only thing anyone noticed from your article was Gore. As a Republican, the thing I noticed was…"Democratic voters would be disenfranchised!! Not just voters in Michigan and Florida". Oh how terrible!!! Thats just not right!!! The votes must be counted!!!! The world is coming to an end!!!! BEN, WHERE DID ALL THESE PEOPLE GO?!?! Someone please call the year 2000 and find these people…oh thats right, I forgot, Bush had them killed.

  17. fred April 1st, 2008 at 2:43 pm

    Chuck,
Hillary has a 3% chance huh? How about you and I make a wager. I you are willing to give me those odds I will let you pick the amount.

  18. larry d. April 1st, 2008 at 7:18 pm

    Is Dukakis still alive?

  19. Russ April 1st, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Why does Al Gore need need to spend $300 million on advertising to remind everyone that we agree with him?

  20. Viper April 1st, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Although it seems like it would be way too late for Gore to enter, it would be intersesting to see how the other two candidates battled against him.
