The Next Chairman (Chairwoman) is……..

Carol KlingerVery late last night, I got the official word from one of my sources, but was sworn to secrecy until today's press conference got under way. It is bad business to leak this kind of stuff for personal gain, so I sat on it until now.

Cuyahoga Falls at large Councilwoman Carol Klinger is the choice of the New Summit Republicans to take on Alex. She's a CPA, an MBA, and a business executive (currently the Retail Finance Manager at Goodyear Tire). From all I have been able to gather, she is sharp and is a great choice. Other than making stuff up, I am not sure what line of attack Team Arshinkoff will possibily use against her. Strategically, this is a very wise move. Too many party regulars right now think serving the party means serving them personally. That kind of thinking is not going to lead to a turnaround. Klinger will change the mindset of the party.

Everyone was expecting the pick to be Don Varian, and everyone was wrong. After his appointment to the BOE, it made no sense. Some fools even speculated it would be Kevin Coughlin himself. There was never a chance of that happening.

So there you go. The battle lines are drawn. It is the losing ways of the current regime against a group with a goal of, you know, winning some damn elections. Time to pick sides, Summit County GOPers.

UPDATE: We should have some video up of the press conference later today. Don Varian led the event and gave the main speech, leading everyone to assume it would be him. Jaws dropped when he announced it was Carol Klinger.

Hmmmmm. This is a surprise. On paper she is formidable.

  2. DD March 25th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

In person she is more so. Great choice.

  3. Tom Reynolds March 25th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Carol Who? She is not very well known countywide. Does she have the fortitude, nastiness, and aggressiveness to maintain party discipline, the ability to raise millions of dollars, and the skills to lead the party to victory in a Democratic area? I doubt it. This was a horrible choice. Kevin Coughlin should have picked someone that is better known and has proven can raise large sums of money. This poor choice will result in a sure win for Alex.

  4. knowledgable March 25th, 2008 at 2:36 pm

As someone who lives in cuyahoga falls and has seen Mrs. Klinger at council meetings I can assure you she has the nastiness she is quite the bitch if she does not get her way.

  5. Ford MS March 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

    Great!!

  6. Ben Keeler March 25th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Knowledgable, I am unclear if your comment is supposed to be a positive or negative one.

I disagree w/ Tom Reynolds. The only people Klinger has to convince is those that vote on Central Cmte. She is a stark contrast to Alex.

  7. Knowledgable March 25th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

As a democrat I am unsure if it is positive or negative myself. If that's what the republicans think they need it's positive if not it's negative.

  8. Hoover Girl March 25th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Carol Klinger gets it done, no matter what the task. She not only has the ability to bring in the money and to be aggressive when she needs to be, but will do it all with integrity and unrelenting honor, a stark contrast to our current chairman. She is the perfect model of what it means to be a conservative- smart, honorable, fiscally responsible with private business values, a go-getter with principles, a family woman, a person of faith. Carol Klinger will restore faith in the Party because her character will guide her in all things. Can anyone say that about Alex?

  9. Phantom Master March 25th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Darn, darn, darn, darn! I was wrong! Oh well, I think the Judge Hoover line did a great thing by drawing attention away from her. Good job Whomever. If alexis knows what is good for him he won't dare do anything stupid like what he does to the democrats with the negative stuff, that will sink himm real quick. Oh alexis! let us see if you can run a real campaign if you even know how, or do you?

  10. Kyle Kutuchief March 25th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Don Varian is a great speaker. I honestly hope he doesn't run for anything because I can tell from the tape that he would be a formidable opponent for any Democrat. Klinger looks like she can give Alex a run for her money. She would certainly be a change of direction for the Summit County Republican Party. If I were a Republican, I'd be hoping for a change in leadership. But, I'm a Democrat. Go Alex!

  11. New Summit Republicans March 25th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Alex and his crew are quick to dismiss Klinger. They just can't imagine how ANYONE but Alex could lead the party. They underestimate her.

The party chairman should not be a household name. Arshinkoff is, and look what good that's done Republican candidates.

Remember Arshinkoff sychophants: It's about the candidates and Republican values. It's not about the chairman. You need to learn that and stop spending all that money to save Alex's job.

  12. Klinger is Fierce March 25th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Well Alex is probably shaking in his boots because he is about to be beat by a woman… a very committed and well qualified one who will lead the party in the right direction. I find it interesting that the person who should care about the money in the party most (Alex) is the one pocketing it for himself.

  13. tom billmeyer March 25th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

Of course you back her ben. You have put yourself on the line here. You already lost your race and will probably help your side lose this one. You would have greeted anyone with your stamp of approval

  14. Ben Keeler March 26th, 2008 at 12:05 am

Tom, I am confused. Your first comment says "on paper she is formidable," suggesting you think it was a decent pick. Now it seems you don't from what I can gather.

I dont have anything on the line. If I any bridges with the current regime, they were burned the day this site launched and the subsequent firestorm that erupted…dont know if you were a reader then or not. I am not running for anything anymore. I lost my CC race to well-known opponent. Nothing I do now will help the NSR lose traction. If anything I am doing stuff that helps, by getting the word out here.

And no, I would not have said great things about anyone. You obviously don't know me or haven't been reading this blog or my other blog for very long if at all.

  16. Hoover Skanque March 26th, 2008 at 6:55 am

Keeler lost his pc race because he talks with a hilarious Daffy Duck lisp! Keep shilling for Coughlin Benny!!! Alex was right about you, so much for nonbiased reporting!

  17. Mister Tim Gorback March 26th, 2008 at 6:57 am

Great choice Coughlin, Klinger couldn't beat me in our last city council race!

  18. Ben Keefer March 26th, 2008 at 6:58 am

Kutuchief couldn't be more of a douche than he is….

  19. Ben Keefer March 26th, 2008 at 7:00 am

That's the problem with blogs like this, two idiots kutuchief and keeler that never even ran a political race and they get to weigh in like carville and rove!

  20. S. Smith March 26th, 2008 at 10:35 am

I find "Knowlegable"s sexist comments about Klinger immature. What does he actually know about her?

I second the Alaska independent. Hyperlinks will be helpful for the readers of this column.

  21. Kyle Kutuchief March 26th, 2008 at 10:50 am

Alaskan and S. Smith, I am checking on that possibility and will get back to you soon. Ben and I didn't build this site so we have to check with our Ohio.com team on the posting options.

Ben and I built our own blogs using Blogger, but this site is built with wordpress so we aren't as familiar.

  22. Ben Keeler March 26th, 2008 at 11:30 am

    ….and we are idiots

  23. anon March 26th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

All I know is that many of us would rather look at her and listen to her rather than the bully.

  24. knowledgable March 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

As someone who lives in Cuyahoga Falls and has attended city council meetings I know quite a bit about carol klinger. My comment isn't sexist. The fact that she acts like a bitch when she does not get her way has nothing to do with her gender as far as I know. I have a right to tell it as I see it.

  25. Kyle Kutuchief March 26th, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Alaskan and S. Smith, you may notice that there is now a preview box below the submit button so you can take a look at any HTML or formatting you may like to use. Thanks to our technical team at Ohio.com for their quick turnaround.

  26. s. smith March 26th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Knowledgable: Instead of name calling, try giving us a specific example. "Acts like a bitch when she doesn't get her way" says nothing. Does she jump up and down? Call people names like you have? Shout over the opposition? Walk out of the room when votes go against her preference? I just can't take your comments seriously if you can't provide concrete details. She appears to be an accomplished individual. Would you call a man a bitch?

  27. anne March 26th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Agree with S Smith. That language is offensive and nonspecific. Sounds like a guy who doesn't like a woman with a strong background and responsible job who has "a right to tell it" the way she sees it. You ought to be able to criticize someone's politics without resorting to inflammatory language.

  28. Kamal March 27th, 2008 at 6:49 am

Well, "Knowledgable," Bitch is the new chairman – bitch.

  29. knowledgable March 27th, 2008 at 7:19 am

The example that sticks out in my mind was when at a coucil meeting she was questioning the city's equivalent of a quartermaster. He orders and accounts for the items we have in our warehouse. While I cannot remember the questions word for word Mrs. Klinger was upset that the city orders items for a 6 month period as opposed to on an as needed basis. Mrs. klinger got very upset and raised her voice at him and said something to an extent that it was ridiculous or ludicrous. This fueled her vote on a recent item to raise water rates to ensure that we would have reserve funds for the citys water department as many of our pipes are quite old and waterline breaks are becoming more and more constant rather than sporadic. She was quoted in the local paper as saying she felt we did not need to raise rates as we order items 6 months in advance.
To anne: I live in cuyahoga falls and have voted for carol klinger previously don't tell me how I feel towards a certain person.
To S Smith: I would call a man an asshole

Alex you know you are losing a secret ballot right?

  31. Thomas J. Coyne, Ph.D. April 5th, 2008 at 10:13 am

By age, education, background and desire, CAROL KLINGER is the perfect choice for the position of Chair, Summit County Republican Party. Give her a chance!

Regardless of one's understanding of how necessary it is to help the Party in this manner, this fact is universally understood: Alex must go; if not now, later.

Many people as they age, such as Alex and his ingrown supporters, appear resentful of youthful, better educated, better qualified people, but they have to get over it. The Republican Party must unite, forget this dispute and move on. The alternative is to die as a meaninguful political party.

Alex Arshinkoff may have been a good selection for the position of Chair some thirty years ago, but the job has grown, changed and he has not. He must be relieved of duty unless he develops the pride necessary to resign. Alex should be encouraged to resign. His resignation could send him off with praise and thanks from all quarters. In retirement, he could support Carol with her new tasks.

Alex and his supporters MUST learn to help in this manner. After all, persons failing to join the team in support of solution to a problem become part of the problem.

    Respectfully submitted,
    Tom Coyne

We have the power to change our attitudes, thinking, and perceptions. Positive thinking does not mean that we cover up other difficult emotions but that we acknowledge them and choose to put our attention elsewhere. Laughter itself can stimulate our body to release endorphins and dopamine. These natural substances support feelings of pleasure and wellness, and they can also help relieve pain. However, laughter is "healing" only when it includes others and is not meant to cause harm- in other words, when it…

I am a British Citizen who recently studied in the New York for one year, but I say on behalf of the 90% of British People vote Barack Obama as the next President of the United States. Even though I will not be able to vote in November I ask all Americans from whatever background to do the right thing and elect Senator Obama as the next President. My reasons are very clear America needs to change not only for it's sake but for sake of the whole world. Over the past eight years the whole world has suffered from an incompetent government in the name of the Bush administration and it is TIME FOR CHANGE. Even on the seventh anniversery of the tragic attack that killed all these innocent people in 9/11 the foriegn policy blunders that followed namely the Iraq War has cost America and the world so much. It was the biggest foriegn policy disaster for the Americans since the Vietnam War. It is ashame because I have so much respect and admiration for the American way of life but it's reputation in international terms are worse they have ever been. The American Flag a symbol of hope and freedom but it is the most burned flag in the world. But why is that the case ? In addition why do at least 80% of all people in the Civillised World and also Europe want Barack Obama as the next President of the United States ? I have deep admiration for the republican candidate Senator John McCain who is a real hero and excellent politian but he will not bring the change that America needs in the 21st century as he represents the politics of the past not the future. I was watching a evening comedy show as they were having a dig at both candidates and the similarities between the acceptance speeches of both Bush and McCain were uncanny and almost identical. On behalf on the rest of the world, we do not need another Republican Administration – no more of the MCSAME.

Investigation to begin into whether Governor Sarah Palin abused her power in firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan
By Corey Allen-Young, CBS 11 News Reporter
Article Last Updated: 07/28/2008 06:49:51 PM AKDT

Lawmakers will hire someone within a week to investigate whether Governor Sarah Palin abused her power in firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. The legislative council approved 100,000 dollars for the investigation that will find out whether Palin was angry at Monegan for not firing an Alaska State Trooper who went through a messy divorce with Palin's sister.
On Monday afternoon, the Joint Legislative Council, filled with Republicans and Democrats, voted 12 to 0 to formally call for an investigation against Governor Palin in a manner—that they are stressing—will be unbiased and done in a timely fashion.

Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Monegan was fired two weeks ago without explanation and has said he was pressured by the governor and her staff to fire a trooper who was once married to Palin's sister.
Accusations have risen that Monegan was fired for his refusal to fire trooper Michael Wooten. The council's intent is to investigate the circumstances and events surrounding the termination of Monegan and potential abuses of power and improper action by the Governor and her administration.
"It is the intent of the legislative council that the investigation be professional, unbiased, independent, objective, and conducted at arms length from the political process," said, Senator Kim Elton, a Democrat from Juneau.
